The Bairnsdale and District Wildlife Shelter Group was originally formed in close association with the then Dept. of Conservation and Environment in 19.. for the small number of wildlife shelters in the Bairnsdale area. Over the ensuing years the members organized many learning activities and fund-raising events including:- weekend seminars, art shows, cake stalls, raffles, garage sales and they even sold works of art painted by wombats.
In 19.. the first of 2 children’s books were published to encourage young children in Responsible Cat Ownership with the proceeds of the sales going back to the wildlife.
The last major project was the publishing of a “First Aid for Wildlife” booklet. Thanks to the then Department of Natural Resources and Environment, this booklet was able to be given out free to the public in the interest of better survival rates for injured and orphaned wildlife.
Besides raising funds to help with the day to day running costs of rehabilitating wildlife one of the most important aspects of the group was the support and friendship of like minded people with a common interest.
Since the early days many more carers have come on board taking the original group forward to a new era of wildlife care as the East Gippsland Wildlife Shelter Group.
